VIDEO: West Sussex apprenticeships helping to tackle unemployment

AS Tom Burns, 24, chops wood in the Low Weald countryside, he talks about how being an apprentice has given him on the job training to become a Countryside Ranger.

At New Tyne Resource Centre, Durrington, Lucy Adams, 21, is helping make breakfast for people with dementia. She says as an apprentice, she can learn about being a carer while still having time to do her college work.

Tom and Lucy just two of some 180 apprentices at West Sussex County Council. The apprentice scheme is open to anyone from 16 to 65 years old who hasn’t got a degree. It gives on the job training as well as the apprentice being able to work towards a qualification.

Roles range from caretakers to customer service positions, nursery assistants to social care support workers, engineering to surveying, and cooks to business administration.
