MP Nick Gibb has given his further backing to the ongoing work to protect Bognor Regis Pier.
Mr Gibb met Bognor Pier Trust committee members last Friday to find out more about their work to secure £5m from the Heritage Enterprise Lottery Fund.
The trust is busy working with pier owner John Ayers to devise a plan and secure funding to prevent any further damage to the pier’s structure before it can be restored to its former glory.
Mr Gibb, the Tory MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said the committee was well equipped to take the ambitious project forward.
“Between them, they have the experience in business development and estate management as well as the ability to put together the necessary bids.
“The research and plans that have been developed, and the clear support of the community for this project, fill me with optimism that these plans will work and that one day we will see our wonderful pier restored to some of its former glory.”
Last year saw the cause gain a boost from half of a £50,000 government grant for its work about the Grade II listed pier.
The trust and the Friends of the Pier will be hosting events this year to raise more awareness of their proposals.
