Beauty therapies on way to Bognor Regis centre

BEAUTY therapies are coming to a Bognor Regis centre for the over-50s.

The ways to look good will be launched at the Laburnum Centre this year.

Age UK West Sussex sees the introduction of the techniques as another way of increasing the success of the Lyon Street building.

Director Diane Henderson said beauty, hair removal, nails, massage and relaxation therapies were often booked up a month in advance at the Laburnum’s sister centre in Littlehampton.

“We intend to extend these services to the Laburnum in the coming year,” she told a special meeting of Arun District Council’s overview select committee.

She said it was hoped they would be as popular as the Laburnum’s new gym. Officially launched last month, it had attracted 300 regular monthly users aged up to 92.

“What we are finding is that people who come to try the gym end up becoming members of the centre,” said Ms Henderson.

Latest figures show the Laburnum has 744 members. Of these, 289 are aged 70-79 years and 238 are between 80 and 89 years. They can enjoy some 40 activities from tai chi to Scrabble and French.

Age UK West Sussex began to operate the Laburnum in 2006 and will be paid about £180,000 by Arun in the coming year towards its running costs and those of the Tamarisk Centre in Littlehampton.
