Uncertainty surrounds plans to turn a former village pub into a Tesco Express, with the building still derelict more than a year after planning was approved.

The Barnham Bridge Inn, opposite the railway station, remains boarded up and empty.

Barnham Parish Council vice chairman Keith Ballard said: “We haven’t got a clue what’s going on with it.

“Tesco has everything it needs, it got change of use planning permission ages ago and was due to start work last March so it’s a year behind.

“I’m not convinced it will happen and I’m yet to meet anyone in Barnham who actually wants it, three supermarkets in one village is ridiculous.” The Observer contacted Tesco and is still waiting for a comment.

Last September it said it was due to open before Christmas and was still committed to the project.
