VIDEO: Teams take Action for cleaner, safer roads
The Manhood peninsula was the centre of a huge operation in a bid to make village roads safer and cleaner.
Sussex Police joined forces with Chichester District Council, South East Coast Ambulance Service and the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service among other groups for the event named the Manhood Week of Action.
The idea of the scheme is to educate residents about road safety and to tackle the issues of speeding.
A series of litter-picking Sessions and street maintenance tasks was also carried out for the action week, held from June 1 to June 5.
"In the 13 years I have been with the police force I have never seen all of the agencies working so well together," said PC Jonathan Chapman, of the Manhood Neighbouring Policing Team.
"All of the agencies have been pulling in the same direction to reduce deaths on our roads. The action week epitomises our working partnership. We have had a very positive response from residents and some of them have said it is 'about time'."
Selsey councillor John Connor said: "I think the action week was needed. It was a timely reminder to those people who take
advantage of the law when driving on the roads, where the majority of us are law-abiding citizens.
"I would like to see more of these events in the future. Street cleaning is always a good thing."
Residents had the chance to speak with any of the agencies who were stationed at the Lively Lady pub in Bracklesham Bay throughout the week.
They also had the chance to watch a 15-minute film on West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's information bus about safe driving and the effects of a car crash if you don't where your seatbelt.
Police carried out several automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) operations to halt motorists breaking the law, while community wardens and other volunteers took part in numerous litter-picking sessions across the peninsula.
Officers also visited schools to talk to them about road safety.
All agencies visited the migrant worker drop-in centre at Home Farm to give information on fire, road and personal safety issues as well as housing, health and welfare issues.
The Highways Rangers were also involved in the action week. The team cut back hedges, made pathways safe and fixed fence panels.
PC Chapman added: "Various issues have been identified as
priorities by residents at neighbourhood panel meetings.
"Councillors identify problems within the area during these meetings, such as speeding, and whether the police can help tackle them."
