Important work will begin in Bognor Regis town hall next week to improve the reception area and make life easier for visitors.
The historic building will be receiving a facelift over the next eight weeks and customers can look forward to seeing a new-look reception in 2009 – the 80th anniversary of its foundation stone being laid.
Minor works will take place in the Claren
ce Road town hall over the next few weeks in the build-up to Christmas.
Major refurbishment will be carried out over the holiday period to lessen disruption to customers.
The scheme's overall cost to the building's owner, Arun District Council, will be about £26,000.
Cllr Paul Dendle, in charge of the council's central services, said: "We have tried to plan these changes so the least amount of disruption is caused.
"By utilising the traditional Christmas break for the majority of the work, hopefully most people will simply have a nice surprise when they come back to see our newly-refurbished reception in 2009."
Workers will take advantage of the Christmas closure to install new flooring and furniture and reposition the main reception to create a new-look brighter and lighter town hall ready for the new year.
The town hall will shut as usual at 4pm on Christmas Eve and will reopen to customers on January 5, 2009.
