Bolnore Arts has secured more than £30,000 of grants and funding to create four stunning sculptures with Brighton based artists Touchwood Trees.

The artworks reflect the new village's close links with the local nature reserve and its ancient woodland and protected species such as crested newt, dormice and sessile oak.

Villagers have been working with artists to create huge pieces of wheat hewn from wood and inlaid with mosaic and gold leaf to catch the light, life-sized deer fashioned from steel silhouhettes, a mother, father and their fawn and wood-carved seating with a variety of different textures, from the natural bark to smoothly sanded pieces.

The workshops with artists from Touchwood Trees have been taking place in a Yurt, a Mongolian nomadic tent, with the artworks set to be launched at the Bolnore Fete on July 20 from 2pm.

Developer Crest Nicholson South provided £10,000 for art in line with planning conditions.

After a village survey, conducted by a group of volunteer residents in 2005, both Crest Nicholson and Mid Sussex District Council agreed this should go to the newly set up Bolnore Arts rather than outsourcing to London consultants as originally planned.

Funding has come from Awards for All (the National Lottery), The Arts Council, MSDC, Crest Nicholson, Hyde Housing Association and other local businesses.

Bolnore Village is now six years old with 800 homes and a possible further 600 pending a planning decision.
