SLEEPING residents in Hurstpierpoint were woken with a bang when a car crashed into a church wall.

A Ford Fiesta collided with the graveyard wall of The Holy Trinity Church, High Street, at around 11pm on Sunday August 31.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene and the 27-year-old male driver was taken to The Princess Royal Hospital with facial injuries.

The church is now waiting to hear if the cost of replacing the wall will be covered by insurance.

Holy Trinity's churchwarden Malcolm McKemey said Father John Joyce, who is the rector of the church, will be disappointed to see the damage when he returns from his holiday later in the week. He also has concerns over the cost of repairs.

Sergeant Simon Alexander, of Burgess Hill police, said: "Police received a call at 11.13pm on Sunday night after a single vehicle crashed into a wall.

"The driver sustained facial injuries and was taken to hospital. Haywards Heath traffic police are still investigating the incident."
