Promenade cycling set to be legal

CYCLING along Bognor Regis seafront is set to be made legal next month.

Arun District Council’s cabinet member for environmental services, Paul Dendle, has been advised by his officers to set July 1 as the date for the authorisation.

If he agrees, this will replace the bylaw which currently bans cyclists from pedalling between Gloucester Road and Nyewood Lane.

Approval to allow cycling along the prom was confirmed by Arun’s members last February. Cllr Dendle told them at the time the idea ‘would be good for tourism and for good for wellbeing’.

But the measure was only agreed by 17 votes to 14 with five abstentions.

Opponents of the measure warned it could cause accidents along the promenade between pedestrians and those on bikes.

The new cycling route of some 1.75km will connect with the first shoreline cycleway from Gloucester Road to Felpham’s Outram Road.
