A PICTURE in a recent nostalgia section has prompted a reply from as far away as South Africa.
An article in the Observer on June 13 showed the triumphant Chichester Boys’ Club XI of 1956 posing for a team picture.
The team’s right-back Les Threlfall, now aged 74 and living in Bognor Regis, recounted his memories of the team.
The Observer has now received a letter from one the players pictured – who now lives in Durban, South Africa.
Gerry Cozens got in touch to say: “I have recently received a copy of your newspaper with Les Threlfall’s letter and the boy’s club photograph.
“Wonderful memories: Our 7–1 cup win at Graylingwell, Les missing his 13th penalty, although another 18 went in, Colin Smart’s superb through passes that anybody could have scored from, Bill Houlton’s enthusiasm, etc.
“Les, please remember me to everyone including Dick Scarterfield who somehow missed being in the photo, what a great captain. Regards to all, Gerry Cozens.”
The picture is reprinted here and the players’ names are as follows. From left (standing): G Cozens, C Smart, D Lee, W Houlton, L Threlfall, K Barber. From left (kneeling): N Clayton, N Chennell, C Gardner, R Hammond, N Williams.
