Plenty to choose from this week at New Park

Lots to choose from this week at Chichester Cinema at New Park, headlined by The September Issue and ably supported by three recent New Park successes, and two intriguing documentaries about renowned artists.

Far more insightful than The Devil Wears Prada and Prt a Porter put together, The September Issue follows Vogue's British editor Anna Wintour as she puts together the magazine's most important issue of the fashion calendar.

It is consistently funny and engaging, and just missed out on the first prize in the 2009 Chichester International Film Festival Audience Award.

Three films which have recently had great success with the Chichester audience return this week.

Cheri is based on Colette's novel, and is a visually-stunning period piece set in 1920s Paris, which reunites Stephen Frears (director), Michelle Pfeiffer (actress) and Christopher Hampton (screenwriter) from the beautiful 80s film Dangerous Liaisons.

Julie & Julia stars Meryl Streep as the real-life celebrity cook, Julia Child.

She puts in a typically-dazzling performance alongside co-star Amy Adams, and it is safe to say this is one of the most delightful films of the year.

The Soloist is another film based on a real-life character, Nathaniel Ayers, who has the most incredible musical talent.

Unfortunately it is not being noticed because he is a homeless man who sleeps under an LA freeway.

This is until an LA Times reporter (Robert Downey Jr – brilliant as usual!) brings his story to the world.

Look out for Oscar nominees here. Two documentaries tie up the week beautifully. The first, Charles Dickens' England, is narrated by

the perfectly eccentric Sir Derek Jacobi, and covers most UK locations associated with Dickens, including many in our local area.

The Beaches of Agnes is a deftly-assembled, wry and touching self-portrait of one of the unsung heroes of European cinema, the endearing Belgian film-maker Agnes Varda.
