MUSIC: The Charlatans celebrate anniversary at Guilfest

Making their first appearance at this year's Guilfest will be The Charlatans, a band which next year celebrates 20 years since their first major success.

"The big festivals are something that we have just grown into over the years," says Tim Burgess, the band's singer.

"But actually - and I suppose this is a bit of a cop-out statement - I just like playing in front of people whether it is 200 people or 20,000 people."

The enjoyment's the same - though the size of the audience can certainly shape the set. As Tim says, he likes to think that the band has got various sets it can pull out, according to circumstances, from psychedelic to a more German drum beat.

It's all a reflection of the expertise which comes with sustained success - virtually two decades of it.

Tim actually joined the band 20 years ago this year, but it wasn't until 1990 that the first record came out. The record company will be re-releasing it next year to mark the anniversary.

Of course, it's an anniversary Tim is delighted to reach: "A lot of people in London these days if they haven't made it after six months are considered old news. They have to change their name and as soon they change their name they have a hit because they have still got that experience. They change their name, they create interest and they get signed.

"People get bored so quickly, but with The Charlatans we were very lucky. I remember seeing our very very first poster - and I don't know whether it was because someone had used the name in the 1960s - but as soon as I saw it, I thought that it was an immediate classic. People just responded to our really early posters.

"From day one we had an audience, which was amazing. We sent tapes off and did things like that, and the Manchester scene really helped as well. We were in the right place at the right time. A lot of people thought we were really lucky to be part of that, and I guess we were. But there were hundreds of bands that were coming out of that scene and we are the only ones left!"

The Charlatans join a particularly-impressive line-up at this year's Guilfest. Motrhead and Brian Wilson were the first acts to be confirmed for the Guildford festival (July 10, 11 and 12). Wilson will be headlining the Main Stage on Saturday July 11, the slot Motrhead will occupy on the Friday.

GuilFest was started in 1992 by Tony Scott, who still runs and directs the festival. Tony ran a marquee hire business based on the edge of Stoke Park. For tickets and information visit www.guilfest.co.uk.
