FILM: Will (PG)

An 11-year-old football fanatic embarks on a momentous journey in the footsteps of his favourite team in Ellen Perry’s family drama, co-written by Zach Anderson.

Set in May 2005, the magical summer when Liverpool strode triumphantly to the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul to face AC Milan at the Ataturk Stadium, Will is a celebration of the human spirit against adversity, as seen through the eyes of a boy struggling to come to terms with the death of his father.

Will Brennan (Perry Eggleton) has always supported The Reds, like his old man Gareth (Damian Lewis), and can recount a dizzying array of statistic about the managers and players.

Out of the blue, his long-absent father reappears bearing tickets to the match in Istanbul.

Tragedy strikes and Sister Carmel (Alice Krige) attempts to console Will. “You’re not alone, you have God,” she says soothingly.

“Will God take me to Istanbul?” asks the grief-stricken youngster. Spurred on by the other boys at the orphanage, will takes the tickets and some cash and heads for Turkey, meeting former footballer Alek (Kristian Kiehling) along the way.

Released: November 4 (UK & Ireland, selected cinemas), 102 mins
