SIX HOURS after a huge house fire swamped Horsham town centre in smoke, fire crews are still on the scene.
Incident commander Steve Blackaby told wscountytimes.co.uk how firemen entered the building as flames tore from the roof of the house on Chichester Terrace - after initial reports suggested people were still inside the building.
"Initially there was a lot of confusion," he said.
"People were out in the road and we heard conflicting reports that there were people still in the building.
"Assuming the worst, we put breathing apparatus crews straight in to search for the people.
"There's zero visibility in a fire like that so they had to feel their way round the building searching for people."
A fire engine and investigation team are still at the scene of this morning's blaze, Mr Blackaby said.
