Watch with Mother
Children's TV often evokes warm memories of a bygone time.

The Muppet Show
It's hard to believe that an oddball assortment of cuddly characters including a loveable green frog, a karate-chopping diva pig and a couple of whingeing old hecklers could have such lasting appeal. For me though, The Muppet Show stands the test of time as a lasting classic. Many a Sunday evening erupted into uncontrollable fits of giggles at my grandmother's home as my siblings and I settled down to watch this colourful TV programme after tea. Fabulous off-the-wall humour and always different. Take those pink fluffy things and that gruff caveman with sunglasses singing Mahna Mahna - I haven't a clue what on earth it all meant but it was an incredibly catchy little number!

Pink Panther
I can't put into words how delighted I was the other week on a channel named Boomerang to rediscover The Pink Panther - not the film but the cartoon version. Saturday teatimes and the end of Grandstand always meant one thing in our house: time for two inevitably-hilarious five-minute episodes of the Pink Panther, normally with a Crazylegs Crane cartoon sandwiched in the middle. And you can all remember the theme tune ... can't you?

Magic Roundabout
I'll never forget the magic of the Magic Roundabout. I found so many children's programmes slightly cringe-making, but the gentle charms and wisdom of Dougall, Florence and Zebedee never failed to enchant and remain an enduring happy memory.

I recently found a video of The Magic Roundabout in a charity shop and, on the pretext of it being for my daughter Lily, rushed home to play it - just to ensure it worked, of course. Oh what bliss it was to join Florence, Dougle, Dylan, Mr Rusty, Brian the Snail and all the gang again! Watching as an adult you appreciate just how sophisticated the humour was - Dougle's sarcasm is so sharp he could have sheared himself on it - and yet Lily still roared with laughter at it, just as I used to at her age. Oh, how I wish the TV Powers That Be would bring it back. I feel sure the world would be a happier place if Zebedee's early evening call of 'Time for bed!' once more rang out across the land.

Pogles' Wood
What a strange, introspective child I must have been to have liked the vaguely-sinister Pogles' Wood, where simple rural folk, erm, lived in a tree. Of course they did. There was a magic plant they sort of worshipped, a rabbit/squirrel-like creature, Tog, who was the stuff of nightmares and a boy called Pippin who had dark holes where his eyes should have been. Stories revolved around finding a jug of elderflower juice and other such happenings. I would watch this avidly on my lunchbreak from primary school and go back to class mystified and slightly unnerved.

Watch with Mother
Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember the early days of children's television. Watch with Mother was on every afternoon around two o'clock and the regular line-up was Picture Book (Mondays), Andy Pandy (Tuesdays), Bill and Ben (Wednesdays), Rag, Tag and Bobtail (Thursdays) and The Woodentops (Fridays). It was 55 years ago and I recall them all as if it were yesterday.
