Race to spend cash hots up for council

A WARM homes initiative run by Arun District Council has six weeks left to spend some half-a-million pounds.

The project is managed by the council on behalf of all West Sussex local authorities. It was awarded £617,800 by the government, but the money is only available until March 31.

The cash can be spent on schemes such as energy-saving advice and improved loft and cavity wall insulation, to reduce deaths caused by cold housing.

But Arun’s cabinet members were concerned some of the money would be left unspent.

Council deputy leader Cllr Roger Elkins (Ferring) said: “Let’s try to do what we can to reach the maximum number of residents within our district.

“It’s a short timescale and I want as many people as possible to benefit from this initiative.”

Roger Wood, Arun’s chief environmental officer, said regular checks were made to see the money was being spent, but it would be too onerous to hold weekly reviews.

Cllr Gillian Brown (Aldwick East), the council’s leader, said Arun had a good track record in making the best use of government cash.

Anyone who thinks they could benefit from the money should visit www.westsussexenergy.co.uk/warm or telephone 0800 054 6815.
