Engaged couples enjoy special lunch in South Bersted

ENGAGED couples enjoyed a romantic Valentine’s lunch after a special service at the mother church of Bognor Regis.

The couples plan to get married at St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street, South Bersted, this year.

The congregation at the service heard the church’s vicar, the Rev Tim Crook, challenge husbands to lay down their lives for their wives in how they loved them.

Mr Crook said: “Business is booming!

“It’s very exciting so many couple want to make vows in public and before God to be committed to each other for the rest of their days no matter what life throws at them.

“That’s how you feel secure and know someone loves you, when they are prepared to make that level of commitment.”

The number of weddings had been unaffected by the economic climate, he said.

“We haven’t seen the number of weddings drop off. Far from it. It’s a bargain to be married in church.

“I don’t mind being controversial, when couples say to me they can’t afford to get married.

“I tell them to do the right thing and get married now and save up and have a big party and holiday in a few years’ time when they really have something worth celebrating.

“A church wedding is much cheaper than people imagine and the day doesn’t need to cost the earth.”

Couples enjoyed a pub-style quiz on marriage over the lunch. They were also given statistics to show how married people and their children generally are happier, healthier, richer and more fulfilled than those who remain unmarried.

The occasion was held to celebrate marriage week.
