Noughtie times...

Blimey, where on earth did the noughties go?

One moment I am wondering what you do to celebrate a new millenium and end up like many others having, oh, minutes of fun watching a beacon being lit in my local park, amid over-tired and over-excited children waving fluorescent flashing bands around to the strains of that Robbie Williams song, and the next moment a whole decade is almost over.

Was there ever a ten years that passed so fast, I need to know?

I am guessing the noughties will be remembered for the huge themes of environment meltdown, global terrorism, wars, financial collapse and the unavailability of Woolies pick 'n' mix, but where was the frivolity, the fun, and people doing barmy things like inventing the Sinclair C5 or the lava lamp?

If ever a decade was inappropriately named, this was the one. I mean, the noughties wasn't exactly on a par with the swinging Sixties in the decadence department, was it?

And now all we have to look forward to is the New Austerity and the sackcloth and ashes of, umm, the 'tens'.

We can't possibly call a decade 'the tens' can we? It sounds so weak and feeble.

Possibilities, according to Wikipedia, include 'two thousand and ten' and so on, or 'twenty ten' which sounds more like a cricket tournament.

And I am officially confused now too. Am I, in 2009, supposed to be embracing the new thrift movement by knitting my own stockings and digging up the lawn for veg, or am I supposed to be saving the high street in a devil- may-care-wack-it-on-the-old-credit-card-and-worry-about-it-later-kind-of- way? Does anyone know?

Is it me or is every man on the street now wearing a striped scarf in a Chelsea know?

Now I know this was a good trend for men - an easily-achieved bit of style that didn't make them feel like a plonker.

But Father Christmas must have had a job lot of these scarves of many colours on his hands as they have now become completely ubitiquous and - how do I put this without upsetting male friends - a bit, well, uncool, now.

Time for a new look chaps, methinks. But what do I know?
