There's a win for Newtown Villa but a defeat for Lavant reserves in our West Sussex League round-up.
Chichester University 0 Newtown Villa 4
Premier division

Newtown got back to league action at windswept Chichester to maintain their 100 per cent league start.

They'd done their homework and with the wind at their backs, they soon had the Uni
on the back foot.

Newtown went in front when Cooper whipped in a free-kick that was met by Saigeman.

They doubled their lead when Saigeman swept home after a crossfield pass from Stares.

The students could have got back in the game: one effort hit the post and another was saved by Pie, and there was a last-ditch clearance from Geall.

But Newtown added a third when Saigeman prodded home after an effort came back off the woodwork, and just before half-time Weir lobbed in after being put through by the lively Jones.

The hosts pinned them back in their own half for long periods.

But with the defence marshalled by the veteran Newton, they soaked up the Uni pressure to record a clean sheet and a vital away win.

Division four south

Lavant are still looking to secure their first points of the season after a heavy home defeat.

The home side should have taken the lead as Joe Hepworth broke on the left and lofted the ball over the keeper, but the ball smashed against the bar.

Moments later, Dave Knight won the ball in the visitors' box and his shot went agonisingly close.

Lavant were just starting to establish themselves when they were knocked for six as a speculative shot from 20 yards skidded on the wet surface and through the hands of Lavant keeper Chris Bowles.

Minutes later Boxgrove should have gone two up as Lavant failed to defend a corner, but somehow the ball smashed against Jon Strange on the line and flew over the bar to safety.

It was all Boxgrove and a dangerous ball into the box saw their striker flick the ball past Bowles for 2-0.

Lavant were back in it minutes later as Joe Hepworth intercepted a poor goal-kick and smashed home from the edge of the box.

With minutes of the half remaining, a goalmouth scramble resulted in a grounded Stuart Eastwood handling. Boxgrove despatched the penalty.

After the interval, Lavant felt they could still get something out of the game, but Boxgrove had other ideas as from the restart they were in complete command and they extended their lead to 4-1.

Then, with 30 minutes left, Robbie Pinder replaced Alex Waters and Lavant pushed three up front.

Lavant put the visitors under pressure and Robbie Pinder unleashed a shot which beat the keeper but hit the post.

With minutes left, Boxgrove got another against the run of play.
