Trio make hay as golfers enjoy early summer

There were three 'well under par' champions in one weekend at Selsey Golf Club.
Fine weather, super course conditions and excellent play from low handicapper Dan Nolan won him the Sutton Taylor Trophy with a gross 70, nett 61. Runner-up was Billy Daniels (gross 74, nett 64).

On the same day winner of the Rabbits Cup went to Paul Juniper gross 84 nett 66. 2nd Tony Allen gross 93 nett 68.

Scorching the fairways with a new set of clubs in the Junior May medal, 15-year-old Tom Aspital shot a gross 73, nett 65.

Ben Fielder was second with gross 94, nett 75. Playing off the red tees, the winner was Henry Anscombe, the runner-up Billy Aspital.

To encourage more juniors, Selsey are offering free golf for youngsters aged eight to 16 in a taster session on Saturday, May 17.

The session will start at 10am and last for two hours. Professional coaching and equipment will be provided including Tri-Golf and Golf Xtreme.

* Chichester Ladies' division-two team continue to do well, winning their most recent home match against Willingdon 5½-1½.

The division-three team had a close match at home to Haywards Heath, losing 4-3.

In the County Morrice foursomes compettion, Chichester went out in the second round, losing 3-0 to last year's runners-up Sweetwoods.

The Roy Keeps Trophy was a four-ball better-ball competition, with partners drawn, and was won by Jean Davies and Joy Dawson with 41 points.

Second were Pam Blythe and Hazel Chandler with 39pts.

Ladies' captain Christine Hillier and her partner Kathy Donohue were third with 38.

A close friendly match went in the favour of the visitors East Horton, 2½-1½.

Three of the matches were decided on the 18th green.

The one winning pair for Chichester were Beth Talman and Sue Winterbotham.

BOGNOR

The club's ladies played a four-ball better-ball stableford competition.

RESULTS: 1 J Weeks and C Kitt 38pts, 2 E Beresford and A Chandler 36, 3 D Crook and E Quinton 34 (ocb).

COWDRAY PARK

Seventy-one ladies played on a beautiful sunny day in Cowdray Park's spring meeting.

A stableford was played in the morning, playing in threes for the first time.

The afternoon round was a Cowdray chicken chase – the same teams of three playing one ball consecutively round nine holes.
The day was organised by Jenny Nichols, Linda Doney and Pat Wallace.

RESULTS

Chicken Chase – 1 Morag Carter, Debbie Cheasley and Ann Tyrrell, nett 38, 2 Janice Leath, Mandy Lucking and Wendy Street on nett 40, 3 Chris Barker, Jackie Cardiff and Barbara Smithnett 40.

Nearest the pin: 9th, Polly Davenport; nearest the pin 11th: Frances Marjoram.

Best Front Nine Division 1: Glenda Luff 18pts, Division 2: Terry Hughes 18 pts, Division 3 Merna Heustice 14 pts. Best back nine – Division 1: Anna Izod 21pts, Division 2: June Page 18pts, Division 3: Audrey Hodgson 14pts.

Stableford Division 3: 1 Janet Poat 34, 2 Mary Morling 34, 3 Georgie Miller 32, 4 Jackie Cardiff 31.
