Rocks are better - but not good enough

Rocks boss Mick Jenkins felt his team's performance against Bath City was an improvement on their FA Cup embarrassment - but still not good enough.
Jenkins was pleased there was more fight and desire than they had shown in their woeful Cup exit to Burgess Hill - but it was not enough to prevent the west-countrymen going home with a 2-0 win.

There was little for a crowd of 302 to cheer on a co
ld and wet aftertnoon at Nyewood Lane, but Jenkins promised the hard work would continue in turning the season around.

"There was some enthusiasm and they had some fire in their bellies - but so there should have been. I expect that in every game," he said.

"That's a minimum requirement and the players know it. At least we had that, and we worked harder.

"We hit the post at 1-0 down but when you're at the bottom, those things tend to go against you. That's for us to change."

Jenkins was disappointed in his side's forward play in the final third, although he pointed out Chris Tardif hardly had a save to make in between the two goals put past him.

"The goals we let in were really down to defensive mistakes: two mistakes, two goals. We made it easy for them.

"No disrespect to Bath City but I didn't think they were that special. But once again, a team have not had to work very hard to score against us."

Jenkins said every defeat hurt him - and he hoped it hurt the players as well. And he said a ten-day break between the Bath game and the next match, at Lewes in the Setanta Shield, would give him and his backroom staff more time to improve the 'complexion of the squad'.

"Although we're making too many mistakes at the back, I feel we probably have enough defensive cover," he added.

"But we lack width, we need an attacking midfielder and someone to score the goals.

"Steffan Gaisie had a good little run of scoring but now he's gone off the boil and we can't afford to go much longer without putting away our chances.

"We've got more tough decisions to make.

"No-one said it was going to be easy when we came in, and it certainly hasn't been. But I'm a fighter and I will carry on trying to put things right."

Jenkins also revealed midfielder Scott Harris had left the club. It is not known if he has a new club yet.

The Rocks don't play next Saturday because of their early FA Cup exit.

The squad are likely to train instead.
