Bognor won a keenly-fought contest that could have gone either way until Aldwick were bowled out 14 runs short of their target of 169 from 40 overs.

Bognor opener Glen West (37) top-scored with a steady innings before becoming one of Phil Hart's three victims.

On a day that favoured the bowlers, Luke Seward's 27 was his side's second-highest total. He fell to Rob Willway (2-41), who was making his debut for Aldwick's first XI.

Aldwick's bowlers continued to take wicket. Top bowler was Phil Hart with three for 23, which included two smart caught-and-bowled chances.

Bognor's opening ten overs from overseas recruit Dammika Perera (0-7) and John Young (2-7) stamped the home side's authority on the game but Aldwick skipper Joel Lodge (31) fought back with a defiant innings.

With good contributions also from Ian Demers (25) and Dean Stokes (20), Aldwick were back in it.

With only a few overs to go, and three wickets remaining, Aldwick's Keelan Belcher (39 not out) turned the game on its head by hitting Seward for 22 in a single over – and Aldwick were favourites to win.

But Perera came back for a scintillating second spell that gave him four wickets in two overs, leaving Keelan Belcher stranded on his own at the end. Perera's final figures were four for nought.

Aldwick seconds faced Rotting-dean with both teams at the start of anniversary years. Aldwick are celebrating 60 years - somewhat short of Rottingdean's 250th anniversary.

Aldwick fielded five young Colts, of which Calum Edwards and Joel Hammond were playing senior cricket for the first time.

Edwards direct hit in the first over to run out a Rottingdean opener won him plenty of plaudits.

Hammond, LaForet, and Ed Gyde took important catches.

Another colt, Ryan Hicks (2-28) bowled a good spell, and experienced Mark Lester (3-31) took important wickets at the right time.

Rottingdean finished on 190 for eight. In reply, only Chris Redman (28) offered serious resistance.

Few Aldwick batsmen offered much resistance, but LaForet batted sensibly as they lost by 124 runs.

The previous Sunday, Slindon beat Aldwick.

* Tillington Cricket Club have been picked to host county-standard matches for the first time.

They will host Sussex v Essex under-13 girls on May 10 and Sussex v Herefordshire under-17 women on July 12.
