A bumper round-up from local golf courses features reports and results from Cowdray Park, Bognor, Selsey, Chichester and Avisford Park.
COWDRAY PARK

Debbie Cheasley has retained the Munro Trophy for the third year running by winning the ladies' club championship by just one shot.
Runner-up by the narrowest of margins was Solveig Burton.

Meanwhile in the 36-hole handicap, the winner was Ann Tyrrell, who won in breezy and showery conditions.

Heavy squally showers and gale-force winds faced Cowdray Park seniors when they competed for the July Stableford.

One man able to cope with the conditions was eventual winner Ian Goodall, who amassed 39 points. The relatively-new member of the section showed tremendous distance control under the difficult conditions, and with a sure putting touch, went on to win his first competition.

Close behind on 37 were Phil Harrison, Cliff Davis and Mike King. Each consolidated their positions near the top of the Carter Trophy and Eclectic leaderboards.

Making a welcome return to action after an injury absence of 14 weeks was Tony Castley, who played in the same group as the winner.

He struggled in the conditions, but managed to improve his eclectic total.

* Cowdray Park seniors returned from Pyecombe with a superb
4-4 draw, halting their recent run of disappointing away results.

Inspiration came from seniors' captain Wally Mitchell and partner Gordon Kendall, who won the first two holes but were pegged back to all-square on the 16th. Holding their nerve, the Cowdray pair each won one of the last two holes to clinch their match.

Results (Cowdray names first): Roy Penrose & Bill Hummerston lost to Richard Cottell & Martin Sutcliffe 6&5; Wally Mitchell & Gordon Kendall beat Tom Oliver & Alan Davis 2up; Paul Berry & Barry Overington beat Maurice Woolgar & James Easley 3&1; David Wickham & Phil Morris beat Phil Poulter & Les Harris 1up; Dave Tilley & Allan F.Robinson beat Aubrey Watson & Alf Bickham 2up; John Friend & John Start lost to Colin Milward & Rex Perham 7&6; Chris Hoare & Maurice Watts lost to Chris Openshaw & Ted Chapman 2&1; Alan Godfree & Philip Singer lost to Tim Cotton & Ken Tompsett 2&1.

Two members of Cowdray Park seniors took part in the Petersfield seniors' invitation – with great success. Cowdray's Dave Imlach partnered Vernon Gibbons to overall success with a combined score of 71 points. Last year's overall winners, Cowdray's John Start and partner Alan Edwards, each won a prize for nearest-the-pin shots.

BOGNOR

ONE of the most popular events, the seniors' invitation, took place at Bognor.

Thirty-eight members and their guests, from 25 clubs from as far afield as Clacton and Torquay, took part. Club president Bill Chick and Ron Allcott were the efficient organisers of this four-ball better-ball stableford.

Winners were Ken Catt and guest Roy Mercer from Rowlands Castle, with an excellent 44 points. Second were Trevor Till and guest Pat Woodward (Goodwood) with 43 ahead of John Meek and Richard Burt, JJ Stephenson and Bruce Maskell, Surbiton and Andy and Paul Bence.

Some 40 early birds were on the tee for a 5.30am bogey ball competition followed by a champagne breakfast, all in aid of the Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice.

A total of £1,000 was raised plus £300 in an auction.

Organisers thanked businesses which donated prizes, while Butlins donated day passes.

The winners that morning were three juniors and their organiser Ian Stoneham. James Cullen, Tom Stoneham and Jordan Vincent won with 117 points, on countback from Derek Dady, Lionel Hickey, Colin Maynard and Mark Seagrow.

Third, on countback, were Nicky Holton, ladies captain, Wendy Johnson, Kevin Holton and Chris Johnson.

Each summer Bognor ladies play eight friendly games in teams of eight, home and away.

The most recent one saw Rustington entertained at Bognor.

The other clubs involved are Chichester, Cowdray, Ham Manor, Littlehampton, Rowlands Castle, Selsey and Slinfold.

Bognor ladies played a 36-hole foursomes stableford for the Phillips Salver.

Results: 1 Chloe Court & June Salt 70pts, 2 Bridget Samuels & Louise Colvin 69, 3 Denise Duquemin & Barbara Trenchard 68. Best am score: Angela Allen & Lynda Searle 36, best pm score: Georgina McCormack & Kay Walker 35ocb.

Ladies not competing in the 36-hole competition played an 18-hole stableford.

Results: 1 Eileen Morris 38, 2 Cynthia Rice 36, 3 Mary Hardy 35, 4 Beryl Payne 35.

SELSEY

Coming in with 37 points, Judy Sharpe showed just how good grandmothers can be at golf to win the Grandmothers' Trophy (below). Judy has also won the Elizabeth Perkins Prize with a score of nett 74. Meg Mearns was runner-up with 78.

In the mixed foursomes medal, Joan Bramer and Denny Terry managed to recover from a bad first nine holes to take the Godding Bowl just two shots ahead of Pat and Ted Growns.

Since 1993 the veterans' Section at Selsey have competed for the Arthur Powis Cup. Played from the yellow tees as a strokeplay competition, it was won this year by Dennis Sanderson with a nett score of 66 playing off a handicap of 12.

He was closely followed by three players, all with 68 - they were runner-up Ray DeBuse (handicap 18), third-placed Edward Growns (19) and Tony Terry (17) in fourth.

The presentation of the cup (pictured) was made by Edie Williamson, Arthur's daughter, a very keen golfer herself and a past ladies' captain.

CHICHESTER

The ladies' first team have qualified for the county quarter-finals to be held at Eastbourne Downs later this month.

Results: July Medal (Saturday): 1 Val Swain 76 nett, 2 Nicky Hood 80 (ocb), 3 Helen Ball 80. July Medal (Tuesday) 1 Caroline Hawkes 69, 2 Terry Payne 72, 3 Vron Bicknelle. Saturday Stableford: 1 Val Swain 34, 2 Kathy Donohoe 33 (ocb), 3 Nicky Hood 33.
