The Canadian under-20 international had been highly-impressive in the friendlies he played at Nyewood Lane.

Manager Mick Jenkins was keen to sign him but he has opted for a lower level of football with Sutton, who were relegated from Conference South last May.

It leaves the Rocks still short up front, and Jenkins and his backroom staff were spending today (Friday) desperately still trying to bolster the squad ahead of Saturday's first game at home to Worcester.

Jenkins said: "Gavin is based up St Albans way and it came down to travelling - it was not a money issue. We offered him the same money as Sutton but he felt it was going to be too far to travel on a regular basis.

"It's frustrating but these things happen in football and we have other irons in the fire.

"It's all a bit last-minute but perhaps we will have an element of surprise about us against Worcester."

The Rocks have also missed out on one of their Football League targets, who has signed a short-term contract with a League Two offer, although Jenkins and Co will continue to monitor him.
