Rocks boss ready to give youngsters a chance
A string of youngsters will be given the chance to earn contracts at Nyewood Lane tonight.
Bognor Regis Town boss Mick Jenkins will hand several potential recruits their first starts against Gosport Borough (7.45pm).
The Rocks slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Eastbourne Borough on Saturday but Jenkins took plenty of positives from the game.
Left-back Paul Watson capped an exceptional display with a stunning free-kick, Duncan Jupp and Jamie Whisken impressed as a central-defensive pairing, Danny Smith and Scott Harris were effective in midfield, and Gavin McCallum looked bright in attack.
Jenkins felt his side had improved on their first pre-season outing - a 4-2 defeat to Brighton last Tuesday.
He said: "It was encouraging. We're looking to progress with every game and I thought we did well to get ourselves back into the match against a very good side.
"At the moment it's all about getting matches under our belt and giving players an opportunity to impress.
"Three weeks ago we had to cancel a training session because we didn't have enough players so I'm pleased with the way things are coming along.
"We've now got six or seven players who I would definitely like to bring in. Tonight we'll be resting some of the more senior players and giving others a chance to stake their claims."
Featuring against Gosport will be keeper Tom Taylor plus the likes of Paul Hinshelwood, Alex Ford, Ruben French, Ryan Hirooka, Sam Pearce, Ben Johnson, Michael Mcenery, Tom Broadbent and Oli Barton.
Former Pompey defender Dave Waterman may also make his first Rocks appearance against his old side.
Jenkins said: "Gosport will provide a tought test. They are progressing well as a club and in Justin Bennett they have one of the most prolific strikers at that level."
