A JOBSEEKER was hit in the face and had a cigarette stubbed out on his arm after being taken against his will on a more than 20-mile car journey from Portsmouth to Chichester.

The 30-year-old's ordeal began at 7.30am on Monday (July 14) after he met a friend and two other men in Colesbourne Road, Paulsgrove, believing they were going to look for work.

The group got into a waiting dark blue Rover car, with the man's f
riend in the front and the two other men sitting either side of the victim in the back.

The doors were locked before the victim was driven to the car park at The Build Centre, Church Farm, Chichester, arriving at around 9.45am.

One of the men in the back got out of the car and went into The Build Centre, leaving the victim alone in the rear of the car with the other man.

The victim took the opportunity to escape by kicking open the passenger door and running away.

He then hid nearby before rushing to alert police.

Detectives in Portsmouth are investigating the incident and have released the following descriptions of the two men in the back of the car.

Both men were white and around 6ft tall, one was aged between 18 and 21 with a 'full face' and the other was 20 years old, of slim build, with short hair and wearing dark trousers and a light blue top.

Detective Constable Pete Bambury, from Portsmouth police, is appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or recognises the above descriptions to get in touch.

"This type of incident is very rare and it seems that the man involved knew one of the other men, and had agreed to meet up with him in the morning.

"Being in the early hours of the day many people would have been in the area of Paulsgrove on their way to work, and at The Build Centre in Chichester, particularly trades people."

A 21-year-old from Lavant was arrested and bailed until September 12 in connection with the incident.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC Pete Bambury at Fratton Police Station on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
